WE'RE HUNGRY

960 x 420 - oil/mixed media

Crime is on the rise, shoplifting is rife and our country is economically and socially in a mess. Successive governments have promised much but proven worse than useless at solving our deep underlying issues.  While producing this work, experiencing my own impoverished circumstances and breaking the law provided first hand experience  in day to day life and hardship many go through.  And the following consequences of those bad choices we make.

CHANGING TIMES

1000 x800- oil/graphite/charcoal

Dylan wrote "The Times They Are a Changing" in 1963 and it quickly became a protest movement anthem. With the coming of Artificial Intelligence and the warnings/concerns for the future of humanity, including unemployment on a massive scale (not to mention autonomous weaponry), it feels like chaotic change is imminent.  Researching this topic was scary stuff - what will happen in our future?!

AI APOCALYPSE

1220 x 870,  oil

The planet's burning, or drowning, or choking to death and Mother Nature's distraught ... 'but don't worry, 'bout a thing, cos every little thing's gunna be all right now'..   sings Marley. Perhaps that's because an AI army is preparing to eradicate mankind in order to save the planet? A signature work, and it's taken more than two years to complete!

Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett eventually succumbed to his many demons. Original artwork by Nikki Romney, Blacklist Art Gallery, leading Nelson Art Gallery-Studio.

CRAZY DIAMOND

1500 x 600

oil, graphite, ink

Syd Barrett, legendary founding member of the brilliant Pink Floyd, loved painting flowers, but eventually succumbed to his many demons.

Are we evolving toward a more tolerant society where people can be whoever they choose?

WANNABE ME

1220 x 820  - oil, graphite

This work explores the hope we're evolving to a point where people can be whoever they choose to be, without being targeted and attacked for their differences.   We still have a long way to go.

Inspired by Sting's old song with the Police, which asked if ''the Russian's love their children too". Original artwork by Nikki Romney, Blacklist Art Gallery, leading Nelson Art Gallery-Studio.

JET PLANES & POPCORN BOMBS

700x550

Reality tv, or is it real?!

Inspiration for this painting came from the early days of Russia's war on Ukraine, where many of us gravitated to our televisions for the latest update - some sitting down with snacks.

Taking Back New Zealand ... yes there are two paths we can go on. Painting by Nikki Romney, Blacklist Art Gallery, leading Nelson Art Gallery-Studio.

WE'RE TAKING BACK NZ

780 x 580

oil, mixed media

"What do you think, we're taking back New Zealand!".  That was the news on the street in Nelson  2021.

Nikki Romney's take on current debate around Te Tiriti, including handpainted images of Te Pāti Māori co-leaders.

ONE LAW, ONE PEOPLE, ONE SONG

The song is Puha and Pakeha!

780 x 750 - oil & mixed media

Waitangi Day 2024  - The political lead up was interesting with our new coalition government.  I immersed myself in the drama, feeling the fear of Maori activism against Pakeha.  This is my satirical representation.,

Cannibalism was practiced among many cultures. Based on an 80s song. Original artwork by Nikki Romney, Blacklist Art Gallery, leading Nelson Art Gallery-Studio.

I EAT CANNIBALS

800 x 600

oil, acrylic, ink

Beauty and the Priest is the tragic, true story of Jeri's conversion therapy and family pressure.

BEAUTY AND THE PRIEST

610 x 610 oil/ mixed media

IMAGINE IF

1220 x705 - oil/mixed media

Imagine China as a fun-loving and free society, New Zealand a totalitarian police state and David Bowie a Maori.... Well, Bowie was a bit of chameleon, but there’s little chance of China changing any time soon, and as for NZ ..  well, it is true that in 2022 our police were given rights to make their own judgments about hate speech, putting freedom of expression on a dangerously slippery slope.

LADY LIBERTY

930x820 - oil

Culture wars are being staged around the globe, affecting individual liberties. Painting by Nikki Romney, Blacklist Art Gallery, leading Nelson Art Gallery-Studio.

FASHION CRIMINAL

1000 x 700

LAY LADY LAY

1020 x 815 - oil

Many of Dylan’s lyrics are deep and thoughtful, however, ’Lay lady lay, lay upon my big brass bed’ seems nothing more profound than a wonderful night of lust and love, perhaps.
